Terms of service
These terms govern your use of the Diction website, the playable demo, and the Diction mobile app. By using any of them, you're agreeing to what's on this page. We've tried to keep it short and readable.
1. Who we are and what these terms cover
“Diction”, “we” or “us” refers to the team operating the Diction website at dictiongame.comand the Diction mobile application (together, the “Service”). “You” means anyone who visits the website, plays the demo, joins the waitlist, or uses the app.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old (or 16 in the EEA, where required) to use the Service. If you're under 18, you confirm a parent or guardian has agreed to these terms on your behalf. The Service is rated for a general audience but is built for competitive play and may not be suitable for very young children.
3. Your account
When the mobile app launches, you'll need an account to play ranked matches. You're responsible for keeping your login credentials safe and for all activity that happens on your account. Tell us straight away through our contact form if you think someone else has accessed it.
Pick a display name that isn't offensive, doesn't impersonate someone else, and doesn't infringe a trademark. We may rename or suspend accounts that don't follow this.
4. Fair play
Diction is a competitive game and fair play is non-negotiable. You agree not to:
- Use any bot, script, modified client, automation, OCR, or assistive software to find words for you.
- Coordinate with an opponent to manipulate ratings, queue-dodge, boost, or sandbag.
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the Service's source code, dictionaries, or board-generation logic.
- Exploit bugs, latency, or matchmaking flaws instead of reporting them.
- Harass, threaten, or abuse other players in chat, display names, or any other surface.
Breaching this section can result in match losses, rating resets, temporary suspensions, or a permanent ban — at our reasonable discretion and proportionate to the breach.
5. Diction Pro and other purchases
Diction is free to play. Diction Pro is an optional subscription that unlocks deeper analysis, replay tools, and cosmetics. It does not grant any in-match advantage — the gameplay is identical for free and Pro players.
All purchases are processed by Apple or Google through their respective stores. Their refund and billing terms apply, in addition to any statutory rights you have. Recurring subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled in your App Store or Google Play account settings.
We may change subscription pricing or features with reasonable prior notice. If we do, you can cancel before the next renewal without penalty.
6. User content
The Service may let you post chat messages, friend requests, or custom display names (“User Content”). You retain ownership of anything you post, and you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, display, and transmit it solely so we can operate the Service.
You're responsible for your User Content and confirm it doesn't infringe anyone's rights or break the law. We can remove User Content that violates these terms or our community standards.
7. Our intellectual property
The Diction name, logo, board pattern, dictionaries, software, art, sounds, and all other parts of the Service are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other laws. Subject to these terms, we grant you a personal, limited, revocable, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use the Service for your own non-commercial enjoyment. Nothing else is granted.
8. Beta features and the demo
The web demo and any features marked “beta”, “preview”, or similar are provided for testing and evaluation. They may change, break, or be withdrawn at any time, and any progress, scores, or data they hold may be reset without notice.
9. Disclaimers
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent permitted by law, we disclaim all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of harmful components.
10. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Diction will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising from or related to your use of the Service.
Our total liability to you for all claims in any 12-month period will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you've paid us in that period, or (b) £50.
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't be limited under applicable law — including your statutory consumer rights, which are not affected by anything on this page.
11. Suspension and termination
You can stop using the Service at any time and delete your account from in-app settings (or by emailing us). We can suspend or terminate your access if you breach these terms, if we're required to by law, or if continuing the Service would expose us or other players to material risk. Where reasonable, we'll give you notice and a chance to fix the issue first.
Sections that by their nature should survive termination (intellectual property, disclaimers, liability, and governing law) will continue to apply.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. If a change is material, we'll let you know in-app or by email at least 14 days before it takes effect. If you don't agree, you can stop using the Service. Continuing to use it after the effective date means you accept the updated terms.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them, except that if you're a consumer based in the EEA, you may also bring proceedings in your country of residence.
14. Contact
For anything related to these terms — including notices, takedown requests, or feedback — reach us through our contact form. We read every message.
