Privacy policy
We're Diction — a small team building a competitive word game. This page explains exactly what data we collect, why we collect it, and what your rights are. No dark patterns, no resold data, no surprises.
Who we are
Diction (“Diction”, “we”, “us”) operates this website (dictiongame.com) and the Diction mobile application. We are the data controller for any personal information described in this policy. You can reach us through our contact form for any privacy question or request.
Data we collect
We collect the minimum amount of data needed to run a fair, working competitive word game. Specifically:
- Waitlist email address. If you submit an email on the waitlist form, we store it solely so we can email you when the game launches and when major updates ship.
- Account data (in-app). When the mobile app launches, we will store a display name, an opaque user ID, your ELO rating, and your match history. We do not store your real name or contact details unless you give them to us.
- Match data. The boards you play, the words you find, and the timestamps of your matches. This is required to verify fair play, calculate ratings, and produce post-match analysis.
- Device & technical data. Basic information sent automatically by your browser or device — IP address, device model, OS version, language, and crash reports. We use this to keep the service reliable and to investigate abuse.
- Purchases (in-app). If you subscribe to Diction Pro, your payment is processed by Apple or Google. We never see or store your card details — we only receive a confirmation that entitles your account to Pro features.
We do not collect precise location, contacts, microphone, camera, or health data.
Why we use it (legal bases)
Under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR we rely on the following legal bases:
- Performance of a contract— to give you an account, run matches, and deliver Pro features you've paid for.
- Legitimate interests — to keep the game fair (anti- cheat, abuse prevention), monitor performance, and improve the product. We weigh these against your rights and only use the data we genuinely need.
- Consent — for the waitlist email, optional marketing emails, and any non-essential analytics. You can withdraw consent at any time.
How long we keep it
- Waitlist emails are kept until launch, and for up to 12 months after, unless you ask us to delete sooner or unsubscribe.
- Account & match datais kept while your account is active. If you delete your account, we erase or anonymise it within 30 days, except where we're legally required to keep records (for example, tax records on Pro purchases).
- Crash & technical logs are retained for up to 90 days and then automatically discarded.
Who we share it with
We don't sell or rent your data. We use a small number of processors who act only on our instructions:
- Hosting & infrastructure — to run our website and game servers.
- Email delivery — to send waitlist and account emails.
- App stores — Apple and Google process payments and deliver the app.
- Crash reporting — to receive anonymised crash traces so we can fix bugs.
We may also disclose information if we're legally required to do so, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Diction or our players.
International transfers
Our processors may store data outside the UK and EEA (typically in the US). When that happens, we rely on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum and the EU Standard Contractual Clauses to ensure your data remains protected to the same standard.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our use of your personal data, and to data portability. To exercise any of these, send us a request via our contact formfrom the email address associated with your account or waitlist signup. We'll respond within 30 days.
You can also lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority — in the UK, that's the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
Cookies
The Diction website uses only essential cookies needed to make the site work and to remember your preferences (for example, your demo high score is stored locally in your browser, not on our servers). We do not run advertising trackers and we do not embed third-party analytics that profile you across other sites.
Children
Diction is rated for ages 12 and up. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA where applicable). If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
When we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, where appropriate, notify you in-app or by email. Continuing to use Diction after a change means you accept the updated policy.
